What is ADHD?

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a condition that affects people’s feelings and behaviour. It involves difficulty focusing or prioritising with or without hyperactivity and/or impulsive behaviour. Adults with ADHD often struggle with mood swings, anxiety and depression. It is a common misconception that ADHD only occurs in children. So, despite its high prevalence, very few adults with ADHD get the proper help they need. See below how we can help you.

Counselling & CBT for ADHD can have several benefits including:

  • Help you gain focus and clarity
  • Develop better impulse control
  • Recognize and change unhelpful thought patterns
  • Learn to let go of bad feelings about yourself
  • Shift your focus to your strengths
  • Capitalize on the things you do best
  • Learn techniques to help manage time effectively
  • Improve your organisational skills
  • Improve your communication skills
  • Learn to better manage stress and anger
  • Improve your social interactions
  • Help build stronger relationships
  • Recognize situations in which sensory hyper-reactivity could present challenges and discover how to manage these situations better

How Can Therapy for ADHD Help?

Working with an ADHD therapist can be transformational for many people. It can open your eyes to all the ways ADHD impacts your life and equip you with tools to establish a healthier, happier future. Our ADHD therapists can help you harness your unique strengths and skills and teach you practical strategies to help you overcome the challenges of ADHD. Therapy can be especially helpful if you have depression, anxiety, or other psychological difficulties alongside ADHD.

Medication for ADHD

Medication may help reduce interruptive and hyperactive behaviours and improve focus, thinking ability, and social interactions. It can also improve attention and concentration. However, medication does not necessarily help people reduce or overcome symptoms of disorganisation, poor time management, forgetfulness, and procrastination. Therapy can help you address these areas.

Which Treatment Path is Right for You?

Navigating treatment options as an adult with ADHD can be a confusing process. By equipping yourself with important information about your options, you can make a decision that’s right for you.

For some people, therapy when combined with medication can be an effective path. For other people, either therapy or medication on its own, can be a preferred and equally effective choice. Whichever path you choose, ADHD does not have to hold you back from living your life to the fullest and achieving your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can provide an ADHD diagnosis?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be diagnosed by a psychotherapist or psychologist, a psychiatrist, even your family doctor.  Choosing the appropriate professional to conduct an ADHD diagnosis — and oversee the subsequent treatment — can be difficult, and confusing. Each specialty has its strengths and weaknesses to consider.  Here is a short list of who does what.

Psychotherapist or Psychologist

A psychotherapist or psychologist understands how the mind, emotions and behaviour are impacted by ADHD.  They can diagnose ADHD symptoms and show you how to manage and minimise any negative impact they have on your life.  A therapist can help you consider whether a treatment path of; therapy or medication or a combination of both, would work best for you.  A therapist cannot prescribe medication but they can provide you with a recommendation for a doctor or a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication.  A therapist costs considerably less than a psychiatrist.

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is an M.D. who treats the brain and may prescribe medication or other treatments for ADHD. The advantages are that they are trained in medical diagnosis and are able to prescribe medication and other treatments.  The disadvantages are the cost, which usually start at about £500 an hour and go up from there.  Most psychiatrists are not trained in counselling, and therefore, in providing appropriate coping strategies which are often needed by the person who has ADHD.

Your Family Doctor

Most family doctors know of ADHD, but may lack the extensive knowledge of more specialised professionals.  A few advantages, they are already familiar with you and your medical history and can prescribe certain medications if needed.  However the disadvantages are they may have limited experience with ADHD, especially in adults and cannot offer therapy, which is one of the proven treatments for ADHD.
