7 Tips for World Mental Health Day
Self-care is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves and our mental health, here are some tips from one of our therapists at KlearMinds on how simple things can help bring about an improved mood or reduce stress and anxiety.
- Get out and about at least once per day, movement is key to our mental health, whether that’s going to the gym, going for a bike ride, a yoga class or going for a walk.
- Get outside in nature, getting fresh air and if possible connecting with nature around you is a very mindful activity. Try to stay in the moment by tuning in to your different senses, which is a useful tool for grounding you in the present moment, particularly if you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious.
- Having a routine, getting up at the same time every day, going to bed at the same time every day and sticking to this is helpful when we are struggling with low mood. You could try scheduling in some of the things on this list, but only if they feel achievable. Work with what feels comfortable for you, if you can only manage something for 5 minutes that’s fine, you can build it up slowly over time when you feel ready.
- Eating regular meals, reducing sugar intake, caffeine and alcohol/recreational drugs.
- Connecting with others, try to connect with other people in the week, especially if you work from home, that might be going out for a coffee with a friend or cooking a special meal for a loved one.
- Hobbies, having a hobby or activity that you enjoy doing, especially if it is a mindful activity such as a craft project or reading a book. Giving your mind a break from daily stress is so important.
- Sleep hygiene, having a good sleep routine, having a screen detox before bedtime for an hour, having a relaxing routine such as a bath, followed by reading or listening to an audio book, podcast or a mindfulness app before going to bed. Try to make your bedroom a relaxing place to be, soft lights, maybe a scented candle can all be things to help you unwind after a busy day.
